HHS welcomes Kayla Routh, FNP

Kayla (Riewe) Routh, FNP is a familiar face in Goldthwaite. The new Family Nurse Practitioner at the Family Practice Clinic of Mills County grew up a mighty Eagle and has returned to raise her family and care for her hometown community.

“I’ve always wanted to be a nurse,” said Kayla.

The daughter of Donnie Riewe and Jim and Kim Smith, Kayla earned her associates degree from Angelo State University in 2008. She continued to work toward her Bachelor of Nursing degree while working as a nurse in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at Shannon Medical Center in San Angelo, TX.

“During my first ICU rotation, I was impressed with the nurses in the unit,” said Kayla. “They were utilizing all of their knowledge and skills to take care of their patients. That’s what I wanted to do.”

Kayla went on to work in the ICU at Uvalde Memorial Hospital and later Scott and White in Temple.

In May 2012, Kayla, her husband, Justin, and their infant twin girls moved home to Priddy, Texas.

“I knew I wanted to continue to use my expertise and experience gained from being an ICU nurse to help my home community” said Kayla, so she decided to pursue her Family Nurse Practitioner degree.

In February of 2015, Kayla started working part time in the Emergency Department (ER) at Hamilton General Hospital.

“Working in the ER at Hamilton, I found what I was looking for – a team,” said Kayla. “The group of physicians at Hamilton Healthcare System really valued and worked with the nurses to care for patients as a team.”

In December 2016, Kayla began caring for patients at the Family Practice Clinic of Mills County as a family nurse practitioner. She works side by side with her supervising physician, Tim Rudolph, M.D., Kristen Stegemoller, M.D. and her childhood care provider, John Seth, FNP.

Kayla shadowed both Dr. Rudolph and John Seth during her rotations.

“John has always encouraged and supported me,” said Kayla. “I love our team.”

Working alongside her mentor, Kayla is in her element. Her schedule allows her time with her family. As a nurse practitioner in Goldthwaite, she gets to use her knowledge to help her family and friends.

“Taking care of the people in my hometown is very rewarding,” said Kayla.

The Family Practice Clinic of Mills County is open Monday through Friday from 8:00 am to 5pm. To make an appointment with Kayla Routh, FNP, please call 325-648-2850.
