Job Summary
Answers emergency calls and makes patient transfers. Administers first aid to patients in emergency situations providing maximum patient comfort. Relays pertinent information to dispatcher concerning patient condition and maintains necessary patient records of ambulance service. Maintains vehicles and equipment in optimum condition. OSHA Bloodborne Pathogens Class I.
Job Qualifications
- Education: High school graduate or equivalent
- Personal job-related skills: Verbal and written communication skills. Familiarity with operation of emergency medical vehicles and equipment. Ability to adhere to hospital, local and state guidelines in delivery of emergency care
- Licensure, registry or certification: Current certification/license by the Texas Department of State Health Services as a Paramedic, current drivers license. Possess and maintain Basic Life Support Certification through American Heart Association
- Prior Work Experience: One year working in an emergency medical environment
- Technical Training: Training in Texas Department of State Health Services certified/licensing program.
- Physical and Mental Requirements:
Duties of position require intermittent walking, sitting and standing. Bending, stooping and reaching are required, as well as lifting up to 150 lbs, pushing, pulling and carrying of patients with the use of equipment. Some circumstances require ability to withstand heights, prolonged distances of travel, stress and hostile environments.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Operates emergency vehicles and assures that they are properly maintained.
- Drives ambulance at a manageable speed
- Follows safety procedures assuring safe and proper transfer of a sick or injured patient to medical facilities or pre-determined destination
- Keeps ambulance and equipment in optimum operating condition by daily cleaning and checking to ensure safe and efficient operation of vehicle and equipment.
Notifies supervisor of needed maintenance. - Administers emergency medical assistance
- Assists in removing sick and injured patients from various difficult
positions and situations using prudent methods, always considering patient’s injuries and danger of situation. - Administers first aid to sick and injured patient in accordance with prudent first aid techniques and degree of training in compliance with hospital protocols.
- Reassures patient and is attentive to patient’s rights and religious
beliefs. - Provides care appropriate for the neonate and the pediatric, adolescent and geriatric patients served based on demonstrated knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span.
- Assesses and interprets data on neonate and the pediatric, adolescent and geriatric patient’s status to identify patient’s requirements relative to his/her age-specific needs and provides care needed as stipulated in departmental policy.
- Performs clerical duties
- Obtains, when possible, pertinent patient information by interviewing
patient or others and by observing and evaluating patient’s condition and relays information to dispatcher or emergency room by radio in order that information may be passed on to the medical facility. - Maintains dispatching records by recording information required by
dispatching form in order to provide accurate record of activity. - Obtains patient information necessary for billing.
- All reports completed in a timely and accurate manner.
Maintains appropriate supplies - Assures restocking after each call to ensure adequate supplies.
- Routinely verifies supplies are not expired and equipment is in proper operating condition.
Other Significant Requirements
- Maintains confidentiality while working with confidential matters on a daily basis.
- Promotes good public relations within the community while working with patients, families, Medical Staff, medical personnel, law officials, fire department personnel and others.
- Follows safety guidelines and policies for the Healthcare System.
- Keeps station and units clean.
- Follows standard operating procedures and protocols.
