Job Summary
Under the supervision of the Lead Phlebotomist, assists with the obtaining of patient specimens and medical laboratory operations. Performs routine daily clerical tasks, computer maintenance and orders supplies.
OSHA Bloodborne Pathogens Class I.
Job Qualifications
- Education: High School graduate or equal.
- Personal job-related skills: Ability to learn technical procedures involved in laboratory testing.
- Licensure, registry or certification: None required.
- Prior Work Experience: Previous experience preferred.
- Technical Training: None required.
- Physical and Mental Requirements: Duties of the position require moderate periods of sitting and standing, lifting up to 30 pounds. Must be able to hear equipment alarms and have vision to read labeling, instructions and to conduct tests. The ability to comprehend and follow written or verbal instructions.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Obtains specimens from patients.
- Under direction of the Lead Phlebotomist, follows requests for specimen testing as prescribed by physicians.
- Draws and processes specimens in compliance with established procedures.
- Identifies and labels specimens.
- Receives lab requests.
- Receives written or electronic requests from physicians for routine or special laboratory tests and processes them appropriately.
- Obtains signed physician orders for outpatient specimens.
- Verifies non-staff physician license.
- Receives outpatient specimens from outside agencies.
- Enters requests into the computer.
- As directed and supervised by Lead Phlebotomist performs routine daily clerical tasks and computer maintenance.
- Answers the telephone and takes messages appropriately.
- Prints daily reports as required by the Laboratory Director.
- Checks off and prints lab reports after results are approved by the Medical Technologist.
- Files reports and other paperwork as needed.
- Assists the Lead Phlebotomist by ordering supplies as needed.
- Assists with the processing of samples.
- Properly labels samples.
- Distributes samples to appropriate testing areas.
- Generates appropriate work pending and load lists.
- Maintains the supplies on the collection tray.
- Performs computer maintenance.
- Updates patient, test, physician and QC files as directed.
- Assists with laboratory testing when directed.
- Under direction, assists with testing when needed.
- Interacts with patients of all ages, including infants, when collecting specimens.
Other Significant Requirements
- Maintains confidentiality while working with confidential matters on a daily basis.
- Provides service direct to patients while maintaining a positive patient relations atmosphere.
- Interacts with patients, family members and Medical Staff members on a continuous basis.
- Follows aseptic procedures and precautions when involved in direct patient contact or handing potentially infectious materials.
- Follows safety guidelines and policies for the Healthcare System.
