Job Summary

Obtains specimens from patients and performs established clinical tests and procedures. Interprets test results. Performs instrument and equipment maintenance. OSHA Bloodborne Pathogens Class I.

Job Qualifications

  • Education:  Associate’s degree in medical laboratory technology, or education requirements to meet licensure, registry or certification (Required) or 
    Bachelor’s degree in medical laboratory sciences, or education requirements to meet licensure, registry or certification (Preferred)
  • Personal job-related skills: Knowledge of medical laboratory collection, testing and use of equipment.
  • Licensure, registry or certification: Registered by ASCP, AMT, ISLCT or HEW.
  • Prior Work Experience: Registered by ASCP, AMT, ISLCT or HEW.
  • Technical Training: One year of medical laboratory experience preferred.
  • Physical and Mental Requirements: Duties of the position require moderate periods of sitting, standing, and walking with occasionally having to lift up to 30 pounds. Must be able to hear equipment alarms and have color vision to read labeling, instructions and to conduct tests. The ability to comprehend and follow written or verbal instructions.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Obtains specimens from patients.
  • Reviews and follows requests for tests and procedures prescribed by physicians.
  • Draws and processes specimens promptly and in compliance with established procedure.

    Identifies and labels specimens.
  • Practices clinical laboratory science in the areas of hematology, immunohematology, urinalysis, coagulation, serology and clinical chemistry.
  • Responsible for the examination of materials or specimens taken from the human body to provide information or materials for use in the diagnosis, prevention or treatment of a disease or assessment of a medical condition.
  • Conducts pre-analytic, analytic and post-analytic phases of examination.
  • Performs clinical laboratory examinations on body fluids and exudates utilizing quantitative, qualitative or automated methods.
  • Performs hematological clinical laboratory examinations.
  • Performs any chemical or immunochemical test for which competency has been validated to obtain data for use in the diagnosis and treatment of disease.
  • Studies the macroscopic and microscopic morphology of blood and body fluid constituents to obtain data for use in the diagnosis and treatment of disease including proficiency testing, quality control and validation studies.
  • Performs immunochematilogical clinical laboratory examinations including compatibility testing, unexpected transfusion outcome investigations, screening for unexpected antibodies and related immunohematological procedures including proficiency testing, quality control and validation studies.
  • Performs and interprets stained preparations of blood and body fluids to obtain data for use in the diagnosis and treatment of disease.
  • Performs support duties in assisting with the daily operations of the laboratory.
  • Performs duties in certain pre-analytic functions and/or STAT testing during off-shifts and/or weekends.
  • Provides appropriate consultation to laboratory or healthcare system staff members as may be necessary.
  • Receives written or electronic requests from physicians for routine or special laboratory tests.
  • Sets up/adjusts laboratory instrumentation as required.
  • Oversees the work of non-independent practitioners, students, and trainees as required.

  • Serves as a general supervisor of the laboratory operations in the absence of the director and if the director is not available for immediate communication.
