Overview
Performs the duties of receptionist and maintains all clerical activities of the nursing unit, including transcription of physician orders and admission and discharge procedures. Performs under the direction and supervision of a professional nurse. OSHA Bloodborne Pathogens Class I.
Job Qualifications
- Education: High School Graduate or equivalent.
- Personal job-related skills: Legible handwriting and ability to spell, effective oral and written communication skills.
- Licensure, registry or certification: Possess and maintain Basic Life Support Certification through American Heart Association
- Prior Work Experience: Clerical and medical terminology experience
- Technical Training: None Required.
- Physical and Mental Requirements: Duties of the position require moderate periods of standing and walking and sitting for extended periods. Lifting up to 25 pounds and some bending, reaching and stooping. The ability to comprehend and follow verbal or written instructions.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Maintains accurate and timely records according to hospital policy and procedure.
- Checks all charts when physician has completed them in order to obtain STAT and discharge orders.
- Transcribes all orders to file and other appropriate documents, enters all pertinent information on appropriate requests and gives chart to the Registered Nurse to note in a timely manner.
- Transports all STAT orders to the appropriate department immediately after checking with the Registered Nurse and transports all other requests after the Registered Nurse has noted all orders.
- Initiates, assembles and maintains charts for all patients on the assigned
unit(s). Makes up new charts as needed. - Charts routine items such as vital signs, daily charges, diet, etc.
- Checks charts and maintains proper documents in charts.
- Checks all charts for headings and blank spaces and assures that allergies are written in and that all reports are on the correct chart.
- Advises supervisor of incomplete documentation.
- Completes all pertinent information and dissembles chart when discharge order is received and notifies office of dismissal if patient is unable to go to the office.
- Routes chart correctly when patient is discharged or transferred.
- Notifies office of admissions in a timely manner.
- Pulls physician’s orders and routes orders to the appropriate personnel/department.
- Transcribes physician’s orders, completes all necessary forms, requisitions and communications necessary to implement orders.
- Notifies Materials Management of needed supplies.
- Makes copies of all documentation at supervisor’s or Registered Nurse’s direction for patient being transferred to another medical facility.
- Checks drug reorder dates as supplied by pharmacy daily, stamps the reorder on the chart.
- Documents the daily census and charges and turns them in to the Business Office in a timely manner.
Ensures vital information is passed between shifts and nursing personnel.- Informs the nursing supervisor or Registered Nurse on completion of x-ray and lab procedures and acquires patient’s meal if required.
- Reminds nursing personnel of specimens that are to be collected.
- Notifies housekeeping of room numbers after dismissal in a timely manner.
- Gives exchange report to other unit clerks and health care personnel providing accurate and complete information on patient(s) at the change of shift, when a patient is transferred to another unit, admitted, discharged and at intervals during the shift when required.
- Consistently functions proficiently in unit nursing modalities.
